The beauty, performance and safety of cedar shakes and shingles are available
for your home or business by using Cedar Plus Shakes and Shingles. Natural
weathering tests have confirmed a high degree of safety for our fire retardant
products. During testing, CedarPlus was exposed to the elements (rain, sun and
wind) and then every year submitted again to rigorous fire testing. Through this
process of achieving required levels of natural weathering, fire treated shakes
and shingles are then certified for sale.
To obtain that level of fire retardancy, high quality cedar shakes and shingles are
placed in pressure treatment cylinders where fire retardants are injected into the
inner cells of the wood. The material then goes through a polymerization process
and the fire retardants are locked into the wood fiber. Cedar Plus shakes and
shingles have been tested and certified to UL Standard UL-790, UBC standard
15-2 and National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA256.
In recent years, there have been some misconceptions of the link between fires
and wood roofs. It is a proven fact that when wood roof homes are destroyed, it is
disproportionately due to the use of untreated wood shakes or shingles.
Unfortunately the difference is rarely pointed out. In actuality, homes with
combustible roofs are susceptible to fire that spreads as a result of flying embers,
carried by high winds that land on these roofs. But, in proven occurrences,
homeowners using legally fire retardant cedar shakes and shingles like Cedar
Plus have found their homes intact after severe wildfires. It is simply a combination
of practicing proactive fire protection starting with a legal fire treated wood roofing
system.
